Admit/admit to

Can I change 'admit' for 'admit to,' or vise versa, in the following sentences?
Even if it is possible, if there is any slight difference between them, please tell me about it.

1. She admitted to having stolen the car.

What a bizarre question! Didn't you read my reply? Maybe you don't know what "optional" means? It means that the writer is free to write "to" and free to omit "to", as he chooses.
