Alone, fearful and scared to ask for support, emotions that many have experienced throughout their lives. Just sixteen when thoughts of having to take care of another human being created a whirl pool of destructed ideas of how life is going to be. Alone, single mother struggles to earn a high school diploma, work nights and survive each waking day the basic necessary needs a human requires. Through compassion and determination to show not only herself but others that she can do it, the day comes for her to walk up to collect her diploma with her ten month old son smiling with a charismatic expression in her hands, demonstrates the vigorous strength this individual has for her life.
Dedication to succeed was formed when I became a mother. Academic preparation that I have developed over the course of my educational journey has enhanced through my devotion to produce a better future for my children. I have learned that I can handle a full time job, two children and going school. I have been challenged, not only academically, but personally and professionally. Along the way of certain events in my life, the loss of my mother to alcohol, the struggles of finances, to discovering what type of learner I am, a strong, optimistic, passionate, and motivated individual has been created with each new course.
Accomplishing academically hasn’t always been my goal in life. After having my son at seventeen, I didn’t believe in a future of education. The struggle to survive was enough for me, I found myself feeling like a failure, the pain I felt in my heart that my son will grow up in a life that was created with such irresponsible choices, I had to create a different go around for him, for myself. I wanted to call myself a title other than mom, cashier, and high school graduate. Confidence was struggling to appear, self- reliance continued to be challenged by many obstacles, yarning for the acceptation that throughout developing years has never existed.
Top ten percent in a class of three hundred students, am prepared. I have experienced challenges, working with families, children, and life events. I hope to become a child psychologist, to improve the essential for parents, teachers, and educators to comprehend children and why they do the things they do. I want to work with families, apply the concepts of working together as a whole and not against each other. Home is where the foundation begins for a person; the home shouldn’t be the walls that may crumble, or the roof that may leak. It’s what is laid down before the child experiences the outer world that matters the most. I want to educate, guide, and support parents and families. I would love to create a program that is successful, accomplishable and simple for those who struggle in life, to help understand their goals to prosper.
An effective counselor understands human behavior, is not bias against others, and has a strong energy to handle stress. A creative person that’s allows others to understand in numerous ways, a communicator on different levels, personable, a desire to support, guide and teach others. I believe a counselor should be able to handle emotional events, to remain clam, professional and ethical in any situation. In terms of these characteristics, the energy I have that produces an understanding, willingness, and strength to be able to handle a counselor profession, can only be measured in terms of my belief in myself. I am confident that I can encourage others, provide valuable support, and demonstrate to others the need for a better quality of life.
