In the following sentences, what is the simple subject? Why?

Several of the boys ate lunch.

Many in the room are late to school.

Thank you for any help. I've had a hard time explaining this to my students.

In the following sentences, what is the simple subject? Why?

Several of the boys ate lunch. Some might argue 'boys', but I'd say 'Several'. Because if you eliminate all that can be eliminated, you are left with 'Several ate (lunch)'.

eg Some boys came into the room. Several ate lunch.
