Grammar

adjectives

Hi,

I think this has been asked many times but I can't find the thread that deals with this topic.

How many pencils are here? Possibly one or two? Then, how would you rewrite it to reflect the fact there are two pencils?

a red and yellow pencil

Also, why do you think there are two commas when I think we don't need any since I think the adjectives are describing (modifying?) one another?

long, thick, protective gloves

Top answer

1-- a red and a yellow pencil 2-- they are not modifying each other; all 3 adjectives are independently modifying gloves .

Thank you. Would you say both my original version and your version are used to denote the fact there are two pencils, one red and the other yellow, although yours is more clear?

a red and yellow pencil

Your corrected version:

a red and a yellow pencil

Yours is ambiguous, but the first thought is a single pencil.
