Adjective to describe a person

A friend of mine asked me whether there is an adjective which describes a person who does things which cause him/her to be looked upon highly, to become highly respected. I told him I will find out. Can any member let me know whether there is such a word? I cannot think of any.

Thanks in advance.

I suppose a person can be described as "laudable" (worthy of high regard and respect) although the adjective is usually applied to such a person's actions.

Admired, respected [which you have already used], praise-worthy [sounds funny, though], esteemed, philanthropic [if the actions fit the definition]; I can't think of more right at the moment.

ambitious doesn't quite fit, but something like that is, I think, what you're looking for. Do you mean a 'social climber'? power-hungry? aspiring? enterprising? a wannabe?

Many thanks to all those who replied.

I think there is no such word. I told my friend so, but he thinks there is.

I will just tell him I have consulted the native speakers from the forum but they say the word has yet to be invented.

Many thanks once again.
