Adjective or passive

Hi,

The dogs were frightened by a noise outside the door. For this reason, they barked incessantly until I reassured them no one was there.

Is "frightened" an adjective or a passive form of "frighten" in this context?

I'd appreciate your help.

That's easy. The agent is given in a by clause.

A noise frightened the dogs.
