I want to say: "First off, you have to make some .... models, to make sure if you have learnt the way to do it". I searched through dictionaries and it seems that I can use the adjective "preliminary" in that dotted line. I also found "prototype" to use. but I am not still satisfied with these and feel there must exist a better one. I am curious if there is an adjective for "test" or not? like "practicing" models maybe?! or "testing" models...?!thoughts?

'Model' itself carries that meaning. First off, you have to make some models to be sure you have learnt the way to do it.
