Adjective for test

I want to say:
"First off, you have to make some .... models, to make sure if you have learnt the way to do it".
I searched through dictionaries and it seems that I can use the adjective "preliminary" in that dotted line. I also found "prototype" to use. but I am not still satisfied with these and feel there must exist a better one. I am curious if there is an adjective for "test" or not? like "practicing" models maybe?! or "testing" models...?!thoughts?
