Adjective and article

Hello,

Could anyone explain which of the following alternatives is correct and why?
1. That's the time when they hit us THE hardest.
2. That's the time when they hit us hardest.

And why is the sentence ''Who do you love the most?'' correct but not ''Who do you love most?''?
Thank you

These choices are a matter of idiom. You hear both sentences both ways. I prefer the second in both cases because the superlative is an adverb and disdains the article (to my ear).
