You're not talking about young people who are intense, are you? Some people can be pretty intense, but I don't think that's what you mean. You're talking about young people who think intensely, I assume.

Just to follow on from CJ's point. If the young prople are intense the sentence would read:

A recent study has shown how intense young people are about their beauty.

I just want to confirm my interpretation of the original context as to contain this meaning:
"Young people are obsessed about their appearance", or " ...think obsessively about the appearance".
