What's the adjective for animals, such as cat and dog whose breed is not clear? Thanks.

It only applies to dog. Can't we just use "plain"?

The word mongrel is generally used of cross-breed dogs, but it is not incorrect to use it of a cat. In British English, the informal word moggie is often used of cross-breed cats, though it can be used very informally of any cat.

If you wish to make it clear that you are talking of a cross-breed cat, then say that.

No. In addition to "cross-breed" there's also "mixed-breed", at least in the U.S.

And in the UK. Indeed, I used it in the first version of my post and then changed it. I'm still not sure which I prefer.
