If you are referring to my earlier sentence, the word 'describes' is a verb, not an adjective.

Sorry to say : We use 'a question word(like...what,where,when,why,who..etc...)followed by an auxiliary or an auxiliary verb and a question word at the end of the sentence' to frame question.

so: was John at work today?

Yes, Toms, you certainly CAN use a question word, but it's a very common way for native speakers where I live to ask questions in that way. Consider it a tag question that merges the tag with the main body.
