Addressing the wife who is also an MD

How to address mail when both are MDs and you don't know the wife's first name?

Drs. and Mrs. Dr. John Smith. M.D.

Sorry, BMO-- I looked through the first 6 pages of the 20,800 pages that google summoned, but with no luck. And I'm stuck for an intelligent answer. One thing I did learn is that you do not put both the 'Dr.' and the 'M.D.'-- it's either 'Dr. John Smith' or 'John Smith, M.D.' If I HAD to do it, I think I'd write 'Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, M.D.s'.

We had quite a row about this in a previous topic. The "Mr and Mrs John Smith" form of address is sometimes considered as being old fashioned. Someone suggested using "Drs Smith" in the case when both husband and wife are doctors.

Thanks. Very interesting. May be "Dear Abby" would know. Come to think of it, may be the easiest way is:

Dr. Tim and Mrs. Tim Banton, M.D.

Yuck!

That treats Mrs. Banton like she is the chattel of Mr. Banton. Don't do it. It is insulting to the female doctor.

Thanks. I read the 2 posts. I think I am being educated to believe Mr. and Mrs. Peter Smith type of addressing is kind of out of date. Miss Manners or Dear Abby probably won't agree.
