Hello. Could you please let me know if it is common practice for a judge to address the defendant in the third person in court? For example: "Name of the defendant?" "Where is she from?"
I came across this in a book and it struck me as odd.

This sounds like the judge is addressing the Clerk of the Court, or perhaps the Defendant's lawyer. That's commonly what is done. Clive
