Addressing an envelope

When I was in high school quite some time ago Emotion: wink , I was taught to address an envelope with the state below the city, with no comma. Now, I am told that that way is incorrect. I understand that the usual method is the city, state then zip; however, is my old way wrong?
Thank you!

Different countries, different 'rules'. g. LA for Louisiana or NV for Nevada) and then (without a comma) the ZIP-Code - usually in one line.

For the USA, I was also told that you have to address the envelope with the name of the city, followed by a comma, then the abbrevation for the state (e.g. LA for Louisiana or NV for Nevada) and then (without a comma) the ZIP-Code - usually in one line.
