Addressing a woman you don't know as Mrs. or Ms.

I am trying to contact an Admissions Advisor for a college just to get some more information about the school. My assigned advisor is a woman, but I am not sure if she is married or not. I feel like using "Dear Madam" is overly professional. But should I use Ms., Mrs., or something else altogether?

My understanding is that at the present time in the US, it is proper to use Ms. to address a woman whose marital status is unknown.

Re the salutation, "Dear Madam,"
I would not address a letter, Dear Ms. You really need to include the surname, Dear Ms. Jones,.
