Addition of 'before'?

Let's say you see your friend being really happy and you say:

I have never seen you this happy (before)

Do we need to add the adverb 'before'?

I was just wondering, if we reply "I have never seen you this happy" without 'before' to indicate 'before this event', can they reply "That's untrue. You have just seen me this happy."

Such a remark would be frivolous, or even impertinent.

In fact, starting by saying 'That's untrue' will usually offend the listener.
