Adding 's to words that end in S

Mr. Simpsons's car goes fast.  or Mr. Simpsons' car goes fast?

Chris's car goes fast.  or Chris' car goes fast?

is there a definite rule to this?  Thank you for your replies.

Hello Anonymous, The rule in English with apostrophes on words (or names rather) ending with an S is your second example. Chris' not Chris's Mr Simpsons' (although this is a more unlikely surname). Hope that helps.

Chris' not Chris's
