Adding a word

Should I add a second 'that'?
Tol was told by Tylocost that he had found Mellamy and (that) she had accepted his protection.

Top answer

"he" is ambiguous. The second "that" is optional. I'd do this: Tylocost told Tol that he had found Mellamy and she (had) accepted his protection.

  • "he" is ambiguous.
  • The second "that" is optional.
  • I'd do this: Tylocost told Tol that he had found Mellamy and she (had) accepted his protection.
  • The second "had" is not necessary; the reader assumes the past perfect.
