Adding a word

Should I add the word 'had'?
Cathan faithfully served Istar, Beldinas, and the Order of the Divine Hammer for the next nineteen years and rose to the rank of Senior Marshal. During those years as a Knight of the Divine Hammer, Cathan (had) fought against the forces of darkness all across the empire until nearly all of them were destroyed.

Top answer

Suggestion: Catha had been fighting against the forces of darkness all across the empire and nearly all of them were destroyed. Nothing wrong with what you have. I just like the past-perfect continuous (underlined), but it wouldn't work with 'until'.
