Add weight to candidacy

The owner of the team says this to a coach while in an interview.

If you were to get xxx to come work with you as your assistant, that would add weight to your candidacy. (Meaning he’d have a better chance of getting the position were he to convince xxx to come work along side him as the assistant coach.)

Is it correct to say add weight to candidacy? Is candidacy correct when talking about a coaching position?

Also :

Is it natural to say : He’d have a better chance of getting the position were he to convince xxx to come work along side him as the assistant coach.

thanks
