add vs add up

Hello,
Which version would sound better:
Carl: I think Russia lost about 40 million people in WWII.
Sam: You are probably adding up/adding the victims of Stalin's terror and the occupation of Stalingrad. The Germans didn't kill that many people and I think you are exaggerating a little.

I personally prefer "add". Add up means calculate to me. He's adding the number of other victims to the number of people who died during the actual war. Can we use "add"?
