Actors' Egos

I just got a painful phone call from a "wounded" actor. Have any of you noticed how damn touchy actors are? Dumb things I've said off the top of my head whilst thinking out loud are coming back to haunt me. Things like, "I guess physical movement is as important as remembering your lines" come to mean, in the actor's mind, "You, don't know how to move your body right." Geez, I thought *I* was sensitive. No wonder directors have to tiptoe on eggs and dance around minefields when finding ways to get the right effect from actors without hurting their feelings. "That was great. I'd also like to see other ways you've interpreted this..."

Hm... depends on the actor, in my experience. Most of the time I have found that the touchier the actor, the lesser the ta

Hmm. You've got to be careful about how you say things to these people. At the same time, some people like drama. Maybe the actor needs X amount of drama to get up enough energy to get into the work. The "hurt feelings" aren't anything themselves but rather a means to end. The more you try to calm the actor, the more drama the actor has to create to get to the level at which he wants to be. A lot

Surely part of the reason actors can do good work is that they are sensitive to emotions and so can interpret and portray those emotions convincingly?

I would tend to think that professional actors would know how to separate their working life (acting) from their real life (bei

[nq:1]I remember an actor's comments in an interview, when talking about a method actor (who felt it was his duty to literally live the part), "hasn't he ever heard of *acting?*"[/nq]
That sounds like the Laurence Olivier/Dustin Hoffman Marathon Man story, the
definitive (and eye-opening) version of which you'll find in Adventures in the Screen Trade.
