Active vs passive (expect)

1. There are also differences in the amount of responsibility children are expected to take within their families.

2. There are also differences in the amount of responsibility families expect children to take within their families.

Are they both the same? Active vs passive voice (I do it for my students in order for them to understand the structures better.)

Broadly speaking, they are the same, Here are a few comments. In #1, you do not specifically state who the agent is (ie who does the expecting), eg There are also differences in the amount of responsibility children are expected by their parents to take within their families. In #2, the repetition of 'families'' is poor style and leaves it unclear who the agent is.

What about:
2. There are also differences in the amount of responsibility families expect children to take within theirs.

The 'within theirs' adds only a bit of unnecessary complication.

I would say 'parents'' instead of 'families', as it is the parents who do the expecting.
