Sure: In active voice, the subject is the doer (agent) of the action: 'I shot the sheriff'. In passive voice, the subject is the receiver of the action: 'The sheriff was shot by me'. The agent is relegated to a prepositional phrase of agency or eliminated completely ('The sheriff was shot') and some form of the verb 'be' followed by the '-ed' form of the main verb ('shoot') appears.
