active voice or passive voice?

Hi!

I'd like to ask which one is the correct one:

1) A lot of gum stuck on the ground.

2) A lot of gum was stuck on the ground.

I don't really like either sentence very much. I'd simply say "There was a lot of gum on the ground." or "A lot of gum was on the ground".

I'd say "to" the ground.

1) you focus on the gum & the condition of the floor

2) looks as if someone stuck the gum there...

(just a wild guess!!!)

I agree that the word 'to' would be better, but I still don't like the two sentences very much. Let's try some different examples.

I went for a walk but didn't notice that there was gum on the ground.
What happened:
I stepped on a wad of gum and the gum stuck to my shoe.


After my walk, I looked at the bottoms of my shoes.
