Active or Passive?

What is the difference in meaning between the sentences below? Should I use opened instead of was opened?

This store opened in 2002, and since then both of my brothers have been working there.

This store was opened in 2002, and since then both of my brothers have been working there.

There is no difference in meaning. I prefer the shorter version with just opened.
