Acting out with ...

Hi

His mom confirmed that her son had become more
affectionate with her. Before, he was angry all the
time, demanding and reactive, always acting out with
her.

Does "acting out with her" mean that he was quarreling with her?

I must admit that I have never heard this use of "act out", and when I read it I thought it was a mistake for "act up", meaning "misbehave". g. com/dictionary/act%20out
