Acted as if its funny/feign laughter

Can you say both?

1 What he said wasn't funny so we had to act as if it was funny/we had to feign laughter.

Why did they "had to"? Did they just do it, or were they "forced" to do it?

I don't like feign laughter; make it feign amusement or feign being amused. (because you can not really feign laughing: either you are laughing or you are not. However, you can feign amusement and that can in turn be achieved by laughing.)
