Act/ate

Hi

We were not only the label's biggest act, we were actually part owners of Island Records.

Chris had cannily made a deal whereby if Island succeeded sufficiently, Island basically ate the Polygram Label Group and Chris became the boss rather than one of its clients.

---- Does "act" in the first sentence mean, something like "we were their best product/band"?

---- Does "ate" mean that Polygram would become overtaken by Island Records and Chris would be the boss of the whole business?
