act out a scene in your head

Would you say 'act out'?
To the reader, does the following happen or is it in his head : "and I ran as fast as I could to get away from them to see just how fast I could run if ever need be."?

I'm trying to say that he actually ran but imagine that people were after him.

I acted out a scene in my head where there were people chasing me with knives and I ran as fast as I could to get away from them to see just how fast I could run if ever need be.

Thank you and happy new year
