Across the hall

Hi,
I was wondering what the exact meaning of "across the hall" is? Is "hall" here means corridor? What does it mean if someone tells you some room/thing/people you are looking for is "across the hall", if you are here:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------you are here--------------------------------------------------
Thanks!

Thanks for the beautiful drawing! I know the meaning of across now.
There are more questions. As in each of the modified picture, how do you describe relative to you the position of person A and Room 4,
if you are at one end of the hall:

Room 1 | Room 2 | Room 3 | Room 4 | ....
