Across

The newborns' concept of numbers is abstract; they can transfer it across the senses from sounds to pictures.

About the underlined part, is it "transfer it across the senses"+"transfer it from sounds to pictures", or "the senses from sounds to pictures"?

So the syntax seems to be the former. I see.

What does "across" really mean here? If it was replaced with "through" as:

The newborns' concept of numbers is abstract; they can transfer it through the senses from sounds to pictures.

would it still make almost the same sense?
