Acknowledge any thing less than happiness

Hello everybody,

Would you please tell me what the underlined mean?

I was angry and disgusted by my mother's inability to acknowledge any thing less than happiness.

I guess it means to accept there are things in addition to happiness in our lives. Am I right?

Thanks so much.
