ACCUSED or CHARGED WITH?

Hello,

I would be really grateful if somebody helped me to understand the difference between the words ´the accused´ and ´the person charged with (the crime)´.

Many thanks in advance for your time and help.

The two are interchangeable - I guess you could have a small contextual difference but 'the accused' in a court IS 'the person charged with (the crime)'.
