Accuracy -sentence within dashes.

Some style guides suggest using a full sentence in dashes is acceptable.

I just wanted to clarify this. Is there any rules or differences between US UK style on this subject.

Are these accurate.

As I feel the sentence starting with 'it' feels wrong as it usually begins a sentence in the context in which it is used here.

It was a cold morning- it happened to be Christmas-and I took the dog to the park; it was a nice day.

It was a cold morning which happened to be Christmas and I decided to take the dog to the park (it was nice day).

Here's my opinion. It was a cold morning- it happened to be Christmas-and I took the dog to the park; it was a nice day. Don't mix dashes and semi-colons in a sentence..
