According to

Hello,

Is it ''according to AN article [Title] written by [Name]...''
or ''according to THE article [Title] written by [Name]...'' ?

And what is ''according to'' called ? Reference marker or something ?
I need to find a list so that I could vary my language a little bit in my essay.

Thank you

Both articles are possible depending on whether the listener/reader is familiar with the article or not. Still, "the" seems the (much) less likely option because of the "written by [Name]" part (which would probably be omitted if the speaker/writer used "the"). "according to" is a preposition.
