Accommodate

Hello

People like to blend in with other people. And that’s essentially why most people get
bigger (fatter). They like to fit in and so subconsciously they eat more to
accommodate the other person, or people in their life. That’s why
spouses gain weight together, or best friends. And it’s why they tell you
that if you want to lose weight, you shouldn’t hang out with overweight
people.

1. To me the wording "subconsciously they eat more" sounds strange? Do you feel the same?

2. What is the meaning of the word "accommodate" above? Become similar to somebody?

I think "subconscious" there refers to the reason for their eating being subconscious - i.e., they don't know why they are eating more.

Accomodate means "to fit in with the wishes or needs of." So (theoretically) they recognize a need or wish on the part of the other person that they eat more, and they try to fill that need.

I think that the whole sentence is odd. How does one eat subconsciously?
Some serious rewording is warranted.
"They like to fit in, so they eat more to resemble the other person..."
"Accommodate", as it's used above, would mean "to fit in with the wishes or needs of."
It could also mean "adapt to."
