Speech & Pronunciation

accept, accessory, accentuate...

0 Hi,02br
00I don't know how to pronounce the first letter (the "a") in words like "accessory, accept, accentuate..."02br
00Merriam-Webster pronounce them as the "i" in "did", my other dictionaries say it's a schwa instead ("a" as in "about").02br
02br
00accept /01font00ɪ02font00ksɛpt/ - /01font00ə02font00ksɛpt/02br
00accessory /01font00ɪ02font00ksɛsəri/ - /01font00ə02font00ksɛsəri/ 02br
00accentuate /01font00ɪ02font00ksɛntʃueit/ - /01font00ə02font00ksɛntʃəueit/02br
02br
00I always use the schwa, is that common?02br
00By the way, I also tend to pronounce "accentuate" more like /əksɛn01font00tʃʊ02font00eit/ than /əksɛn01font00tʃəu02font00eit/.02br
00Thanks in advance. 050010id1

0 I would have said they all begin with01b01i00 æ02i02b01i00ks,02i00 i.e., with the full lax 01b00a02b00, as in 01i00cat02i00.02br
00 A sound partway between lax 01b00a02b00 and lax 01b00e02b00 also seems natural to me. Lax 01b

00 I just checked 01u00all02u00 the words that begin with 01i00acc-02i00in my American Heritage Dictionary. 05002br

00 All entries with unstressed initial 01b00acc-02b00 followed by 01b00e02b00 mark the 01b00a02b0

0 Oh my!02br
00 I checked in the American Heritage Dictionary, and they actually use "a" as in "cat", /æ/.02br
00 But...02br

00Merriam-Webster lists a lot of pronunciations. The first is with "i" as in "did", and they pronunce it that way.12blockquote
10Yes, they do pronounce it that way, and it sounds awful to my ear! Not as awful as a lax 01b00u02b00 would sound, however. I'll still go with lax 01b00a02b00, thank
