My name is (Blank) and I have attended the University of British Columbia for the last two years. I currently have an unacceptable GPA of 46%, as such I have been been placed on academic dismissal, after failing to raise my average after a semester on academic probation. I was devastated to learn that I had reached this point, though I understand that it is a fault of my own choices and actions. I have learned a valuable lesson from this experience and I would like to apologize for my previous lack of success. However I would like to explain the circumstances that had me reach this point.

My first semester, my poor showing was fully because I did not understand the rigors involved in university life, and the changes required in work ethic and life from the high school experience. This year, I allowed my home life to interfere with my academic progress to my detriment. My living situation has been in flux for the last year, and I have been kicked out of my childhood home a couple of times, they I have been allowed to return each time. This combined with some finical hardships, has caused me to become distracted during class time and while I am studying or working on assigned coursework. These factors along with my diminishing academic grades have lead me to fall into a depression, though have not been medically diagnosed I have a family history of the disorder. Due to my condition I’ve fallen further and further down my self-made hole. Yet I haven’t yet reached the bottom and am fully capable of pulling myself back up to the necessary standards of this great educational institution.

Should I be allowed to return to UBCO in the fall term, I know what I must due inorder to bring myself up to a proper level of academic achievement. Over the rest of the summer and during the fall I will seek out a receive counciling for my depression as well as any medication or other medications I require. I will be will to speak with my professors, teaching assistants, go to the academic resource centre and do whatever it takes to understand any problems with the coursework I may have. I will have sorted out my finances and will work on a plan for creating an optimal living and work environment where I can fully achieve the grades I know I am capable of. In the short term I will aim for the necessary 55%,if not sixty. Over the rest of my university career I believe I can again reach my high school average of 75%.
