Is this redundant?

"We stand on the edge of an abyss."

Do we need "the edge of"?

It would be understand to mean the same thing even if you omit it, but it's better to include it.

The meaning is clearer if you say "on the edge".

You can stand on a precipice, but I don't think you can actually 'stand on an abyss'. You need to add something like 'the edge of' to make it more 'physical', even if it's just a metaphor... At least in my opinion.

It's possible to fall into an abyss, though.
