Abstract

Dear teachers and experts,

I have, recently, come across the noun phrase, "Abstract", in academic papers: it appears on the first page, before the first paragraph of works. It gives a gist of what a work is, for example. Is "Abstract" a technical term for "summary". (I looked it up in dictionaries, but I cannot find a definition of what abstract means in academic papers.

Can someone help me, please?
