abreast

1. It is necessary to keep abreast of a new project otherwise you will be fired from the company/organization. [My own sentence]
2. We both were running abreast. [My own sentence]
3. We were running two abreast. [From the cambridge dictionary] --- the use of `two' behind abreast sounds odd to my ear.

Please check whether the first two sentences have been correctly written.
Also, please tell me why have the `two' been used in the third sentence?
