"I'm above" here means "I'm in a much better condition than you think, so I don't need your sympathy."

"I am above" in this context is not standard English, and I can only guess that it is supposed to mean "I am above that", that the speaker feels that he is in a superior state in which receiving sympathy is of no importance.
