Such a situation makes them fall into endless desperation.

My classmate said it is not quite proper to use and hard to understand.

I would advise you not to use this phrase because I can't think of one example where this phrase is deemed appropriate. Semantically, endless desperation seemed overly exaggerated, even for a prisoner.
