Won't is a contraction of will not.

As in all contractions, it can be used in any context except the most formal writing.

Here are some examples:

He won't go with us. (He will not go with us. )

Won't you come with us? This is far more conversational than "Will you not come with us?" which sounds very stiff and formal.
