about who

Hi teachers,

I'm not sure if I need 'who' here.

1. The sign appeared the next year, when the chieftan, an expert at medicines, had never placed his faith in signs before, examined one of the villagers in his dead bed.

2. The sign appeared the next year, when the cheiftan, an experat at medicines who had never placed his faith in signs before, examined one of the villagers in his dead bed.

Thanks

You need who to form a restrictive clause. You might want to rephrase part of the sentence so that who and expert are next to each other. Medicine is usually uncountable, by the way.

Hi Aspara Gus,

I found this example:

The behaviour may have evolved to warn other birds of nearby danger, report researchers in California, who have published the findings in the journal Animal Behaviour.

The 'who' came after 'California'. Is it AE and BRE?

Thanks

It's not a matter of whether it's AmE or BrE.

Hi Aspara Gus,

I understand you corrected my sentence with medicinal expert, but I'd like to ask, just for future references, if a comma can have some effect to set the sentences off:

The sign appeared the next year, when the chieftain, an expert at medicine, who had never placed his faith in signs before, examined one of the villagers in his death bed.

Thanks
