It means that you were expecting something to happen, and that is what happened - perhaps not exactly the same, but almost the same.

Am I making it more or less complicated to add that "about" means "approximately" in this expression (and "what you'd expect" means "how you imagine"). A similar structure would be "exactly what you'd expect" or "not quite what you'd expect".

I'd add that 'what you'd expect' means 'what you would expect ( if you thought about the matter )'.
