About 'way'

In a grammar book I saw this sentence:

Often it is the order of words which indicates which way a sentence is being used.

And my questions is, why 'indicates which way' is used instead of 'indicates in which way'?

Thanks in advance

Either can be used. which way is often a substitute for in which way or how . Some people might believe that in which way is actually more accurate, while others might think it is overly "fussy".
