About use of let

Question

i am a hindi medium student. i am not able to understand the use of let

For eg.
1-let me know.
2-let you know

i will not let you go

and many more problems.
so please can any body tell me the differences between thease two sentences. and give me more example of let

"let" is a bit like "allow" - though it would sound awkward to replace let with allow in the first two phrases. most english speakers would never replace let with allow.

"let me know" = tell me, "let me know when you arrive" - tell me when you arrive / call me when you arrive.

"let you know" = inform you, "i will let you know when I arrive"

the 3rd could be much more directly translated as "allow"

I will not let you go - i will not allow you to go.

most uses of let (though not all) are a bit informal.

another example:

will you let me borrow your pencil?

would mean, "would you allow me to borrow you pencil." Most native speakers would not saw "allow me to borrow your pencil" as it is a bit too formal. Many would say "Can I borrow your pencil?" or "Could I borrow your pencil?".

"Let me borrow your pencil" is a bit incorrect but it is how many people speak and no one would think it odd to hear that phrase.

To a stranger:

"Could I borrow your pencil, please?"

To a friend:

"Let me borrow your pencil"

Note:

"Let me borrow your pencil" is almost a demand and much more informal. It would be rude to speak this way to someone you do not know well. It might also be used when speaking quickly or in a hurry.

Examples:

I let my brother borrow my car and he crashed it! - I allowed my brother to borrow my car and he was in an accident.

Will you mom let you go out tonight? - Will your Mother allow you to leave the house tonight.

Let me see that. - Could I please see what you are holding?

Another example means "to perform an action"

Will you let the cat outside? - means "Please open the door and allow the cat to walk outside"

Let's go! - (two or more people decide to leave their current location and go somewhere else) - this is a contraction of "let us"

Me: "You want to go get something to eat?" - Would you like to go some where to buy food?

You: "Yeah, let's go" - Yes, let us go
