Hello,
He was about to leave when Mr. X caught his eye.
He had nearly left when Mr. X caught his eye.
Is there any fundamental difference between the two? In both cases, he noticed MR.x before he could leave. In short, he didn't leave. He was still there when he saw Mr. x.
Thanks,
